The course begins with a section that highlights the differences between students. If teachers are not able to recognize these differences, they will significantly limit the impact of their teaching. This section includes readings from Contemporary Educational Psychology about student diversity broadly, cultural differences, and differences between the genders and a video that summarizes Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences.

The second section of the course applies these concepts to lesson preparation in general and Bible teaching in particular. A final video provides a window into a school in Zimbabwe that attempts to help children from underprivileged backgrounds through uniquely designed education.

The course includes three videos and three readings and should take around 3 hours to complete.

About the Course Presenters

Shean Phillips completed an undergraduate degree in Bible and Youth Ministry from Piedmont International University in 1997. He went on to pastor in various roles (Associate, Family, Small Groups and Youth) until 2014. He earned a master’s degree in Youth Ministry in 2006 and another one in Christian Education in 2007 both from Liberty Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, VA. A couple of times a year, Pastor Shean travels overseas and serves pastors around the world by training them in the Bible and in ministry. In 2015, Pastor Shean earned his Doctorate in Educational Ministries concentrating in Discipleship and Family Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is passionate about family and ministry to families and this passion is evident both inside and outside of the church. God called Dr. Phillips to be the lead pastor of Vienna Baptist Church of Pfafftown, NC in January of 2019. Shean currently lives in Winston-Salem with his wife Angie, daughters Ariana and Tatiana and two sons Adrian and Jordan.

Since 1974, Kelvin Seifert has been a professor at the University of Manitoba. For most of the time since 2003, he has also been the head of the Department of Educational Administration, Foundations, and Psychology at this university. He teaches introductory educational psychology at the Bachelor of Education level, and qualitative research methods and lifespan development in the Master's program in adult education.

Cross Over aims to help vulnerable children in Zimbabwe to live and work towards a hopeful future by providing a holistic quality education within a strong nurturing environment. The immediate aim for our students is to restore their self-confidence, establish sound academic foundations and then to help them either re-enter the formal schooling system or into an internship with a local business. Our long-term goal is to develop our students to become reliable and productive members of their families, communities and workplaces.
