This course begins with an emphasis on why leaders of youth ministries should equip students to lead within the church. It is rooted in a multiplication mindset that understands both the necessity of raising up leaders and the advantage of equipping young people to participate in church ministry. Doug Franklin, one of the leading experts in this field, argues that leadership empowerment is not an additional ministry of youth ministry but the basis of youth ministry as a whole. Jeff Randleman adds both the benefits of student empowerment and the scriptural basis for student empowerment.

The second part of the course provides practical application of the first. Doug Franklin explains how to encourage students to lead by defining what leadership actually means. Jeff Randleman and Ron Powell provide additional examples of and advice for student empowerment. The course closes with a podcast interview with Femi Osunnuyi in which he discusses how he and his church use innovation to develop leaders in underserved contexts.

The course includes four videos, one audio recording, and five readings and should take around 3 hours to complete.

About the Course Presenters

Doug Franklin is the president of LeaderTreks. Doug and his wife, Angie, live in West Chicago, Illinois. Doug grew up in Illinois and graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Christian Education. He started in youth ministry as a adult volunteer, leading a small group of junior high boys. After spending six years as a volunteer, Doug become the full-time high school youth pastor at a church in Wheaton, Illinois. He served as a youth pastor for 12 years in various churches. As Doug thought about what was really working in youth ministry, he came to the conclusion that everything becomes more effective when students lead. So in 1994, Doug started LeaderTreks to partner with youth workers to help them develop their students as leaders.

Taryn Phiri is married to Jerry. After studying International Development at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, Taryn served at LeaderTreks for many years as a trip leader and training coordinator. She loves creating tools and resources to help youth workers and their volunteers be more intentional. She and her husband continue to serve in their church’s youth ministry.

Jaff Randleman is married and has seven children. He is the lead minister at Parkview Christian Church, in Sedalia, Missouri.

Ron Powell has a passion to train men and women to reach and disciple teens through relational ministry. He has been on this mission in pastoring and teaching youth ministry for over 30 years. He holds a Masters in Youth Ministry from Tyndale Seminary, Toronto, and a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. He has served as the Adviser to the Youth Ministry Institute Director at Vanguard College in Edmonton and has been a workshop leader at Canadian Youth Worker’s Conference, YC Edmonton, Breakforth Canada, and other youth leadership conferences from Newfoundland to British Columbia. He has two daughters.

Femi Osunnuyi is lead pastor of City Church, Lagos, Nigeria, a gospel-centred urban church that exists to catalyse a gospel-centred movement in the city of Lagos. He holds a PhD in engineering from the University of Manchester, UK. During his time in Manchester, Femi had a radical change in his theology and was captured by a vision to see a gospel-centered revival in the city of Lagos. Femi is passionate about church planting and leadership development thus, in addition to his pastoral duties, he also serves on the Lead Team of Acts29’s Emerging Regions network and the Advisory Council of City to City Africa. He is happily married to Tosin and is father to Tofunmi and Timilehin.
