This course focuses on best practices of effective teachers and is divided into three parts. The first reading of this course is a summary of Howard Hendericks’ The 7 Laws of the Teacher. This resource shaped a generation of effective teachers around the world. Next, a video by a business leader, Pierre Pirard, connects the most effective practices in business to similar practices in the classroom. In a third resource, Greg Ogden reminds us that disciples are made through intense relational investment that Jesus demonstrated while he was on earth. Finally, in the Apply It section of the course, Dr. Shean Phillips takes you through an exercise that demonstrates how one of the best teachers in Scripture, Ezra, taught his students.

The course includes three videos and one reading. It should take around 3 hours to complete.

About the Course Presenters

Howard Hendricks received a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College (1946) and a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary (1950). From there he and his Jeanne moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he became the pastor of Calvary Independent Presbyterian Church (now Calvary Bible Church). In the fall of 1951 he began teaching twice a week at Dallas. After one year he resigned to pursue a doctorate at Yale. But the founding president of the seminary, Lewis Sperry Chafer, died before the 1952 school year began, and theology department chairman John Walvoord was appointed president. Walvoord contacted Hendricks and asked him to delay his doctorate in order to teach at the seminary full time. He would eventually go on to earn a D.D. from Wheaton College Graduate School in 1967 while continuing to teach at Dallas. He taught at the school for a remarkable 60 years before officially retiring. Hendricks’ bestseller, Living by the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible, helped hundreds of thousands of laypeople learn the inductive method of studying the Bible.

After a high profile career as CEO, Pierre Pirard decided to redirect his focus and became a teacher. Working in Brussels' most disadvantaged neighbourhoods, he discovered that these children -- usually portrayed as troublemakers -- are able to rise above this negative image. He believes that these kids are the future of our society and that we should care for their education, no matter what their socio-cultural and economical background is.

Greg Ogden is “retired” or better yet “redeployed” (as of March, 2012) from professional church leadership. He now lives out his passion of speaking, teaching, and writing about the disciple-making mission of the church. Most recently Greg served as Executive Pastor of Discipleship at Christ Church of Oak Brook, IL. in the Chicago western suburbs. From 1998-2002, Greg held the position of Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Fuller Theological Seminary and Associate Professor of Lay Equipping and Discipleship. Prior to going to Fuller, Greg enjoyed 24 years in pastoral ministry.

Shean Phillips completed an undergraduate degree in Bible and Youth Ministry from Piedmont International University in 1997. He went on to pastor in various roles (Associate, Family, Small Groups and Youth) until 2014. He earned a master’s degree in Youth Ministry in 2006 and another one in Christian Education in 2007 both from Liberty Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, VA. A couple of times a year, Pastor Shean travels overseas and serves pastors around the world by training them in the Bible and in ministry. In 2015, Pastor Shean earned his Doctorate in Educational Ministries concentrating in Discipleship and Family Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is passionate about family and ministry to families and this passion is evident both inside and outside of the church. God called Dr. Phillips to be the lead pastor of Vienna Baptist Church of Pfafftown, NC in January of 2019. Shean currently lives in Winston-Salem with his wife Angie, daughters Ariana and Tatiana and two sons Adrian and Jordan.
